Parcialidad Baquiax

The Baquiax Parcialidad is a community belonging to the K’iche’ Maya people, located in the Juchanep canton of the municipality of Totonicapán, 6 kilometers from the municipal seat; it was founded in May 1889 and was established as the “Baquiax Parcialidad Association” in 2009.

Members of the Baquiax Partialidad, through their community service known as K’axko’l in the K’iche’ language, carry out surveillance, control, and monitoring activities in forested areas to ensure their protection and conservation. The community’s forest rangers are responsible for conducting daily patrols within the forest to control and prevent illegal logging and other issues in the area, ensuring the well-being of the biological diversity found there, as well as the water sources that provide water to local families. The bond that the members of the community have with their territory fosters collective interest and stewardship to ensure the long-term availability of the services derived from it, including, as mentioned, water, air, firewood, and others.
